‘Life’s way of talking’ An evening of blues for black history month
Ma Rainey, ‘Mother of the Blues’, said:
“They hear it come out, but they don’t know how it got there. They don’t understand that’s life’s way of talking. You don’t sing to feel better. You sing ‘cause that’s a way of understanding life.”
The blues came out of the darkness of the Mississippi Delta and the Deep South, emerging from the fertile soil and growing into a tree of many branches, profoundly influencing all areas of popular music in the 20th century and beyond. From acoustic Delta blues to jazz, rhythm ‘n’ blues to rock ‘n’ roll, gospel to soul, rock to reggae, and so many more, this great Black art form has literally changed the world.
Singer Sabina Desir presents an evening of blues for Black History Month with long-time collaborator Jessica Lauren on keyboards and harmonica, with two special guests: double bassist Jason Simpson (Freedom Road, Dear Nina… Love Ray), and the great Tony Rémy, quite simply the UK’s most exciting blues, soul, jazz and funk guitarist!
Let these wonderful musicians take you on a journey into the blues, honouring the likes of Bessie Smith, Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Percy Mayfield, Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Aretha Franklin, Memphis Slim, and more.
