If you were fortunate enough to catch the sold-out show Freedom Road Re-Imagined at the Margate Soul Festival 2022 you’ll know this is not to be missed! Multidisciplinarian Artist Sabina Desir brings ‘Banned – Live’ to Olby’s.
Following on from curating ‘Banned’ the successful Turner Contemporary art exhibition, Sabina presents two incredible live music acts to mark the end of the exhibition and celebrate the legacy.
‘Breaking Ground’… Vocalist and Composer Randolph Matthews debuts his new work commissioned by Freedom Road Project especially for Banned. Award-winning Matthews performs an exclusive commissioned piece called “Breaking Ground” in response to the thought provoking exhibition ‘Banned’ at Turner contemporary. As an artist whose work embodies a deep appreciation for history and culture Randolph’s performance highlights our shared values instead of our differences through a mesmerising blend of vocal songs, stories, soundscapes and interactive guest improvisations.
‘Banned’ Live!… With arrangements by long time collaborator Jessica Lauren, Sabina Desir takes her place as vocalist alongside a breathtaking line-up of international Jazz and Blues musicians including arguably the UK’s most gifted guitarist Tony Remy and the award – winning saxophonist Tony Kofi. Sabina and Jessica re-work music taken from one of the most dynamic and progressive decades of the African-American music cannon…1950’s. Expect to be thrilled, captivated and moved by renditions of songs that captivate a time of struggle, love and a foundation for change.
